please post this all over http://Facebook.com/funnypics
On March 21st at 6:01PM PST an unauthorized user gained access to our Facebook page using an unknown attack vector.
We have visited Facebook and informed the FBI and, now we need your help in letting everyone know that the Facebook page is now compromised.
Facebook provided to us the IP address of the machine that was used to hijack the Facebook page. Researching this IP address, it was found to be a severely compromised machine hosted in a data center in San Jose, California.
The attack was launched against facebook from this compromised machine. This machine is NOT OWNED OR OPERATED BY FUNNYPICS. THis machine is owned and operated by a third party that is activly using it for malicious reasons. This was not a password malfunction
The datacenter involved has a history of prior issues, it was known prior to this attack that the machine was compromised.
We can only assume this means that the Facebook.com/Funnypics is now under the control of people with malicious intent.
One post made from this page is able to generate 1000+ pageviews a minute, sustained for 30-45 minutes. If the link posted contains a malicious payload, thats 1000+ possible chances for infection per minute
I care about the well being of the users attached to the compromised facebook page. I am only asking for help letting them know. The authorities and media have been notified, I am not asking you to tell the world, i am asking for help telling the users. The people who hijacked the page have specifically blocked us and anyone else we know who has been trying to help from posting to the page.
The authorities and facebook ARE doing their job, in investigating the situation, what they are NOT doing, is protecting those users. They are allowing it to remain compromised, when everyone has been given, and has agreed, that there is more than enough evidence to deal with this. Facebook has stated it will not do anything until business hours Monday morning.
I only want to warn the users not to click the link. The information regarding the actual attack has been put in the hands of the authorities, they are doing their job in regards to that. What is not being done, is informing the users that Facebook will not fix the problem until Monday.
Considering this has the chance to effect the value of our Brand, we are losing literally thousands of dollars a day, and there is prior history from the origin of the attack, the authorities are extremely involved with catching the people responsible. We are very close to catching the people responsible. I just want to inform the users. I have no way to tell them, the hijackers have made sure of that. This was a targeted attack on our Facebook page, It is a high value, high profile target. Regardless of anyone's distaste with facebook, it needs to be taken seriously. This can affect your loved ones. One in three people on facebook are in some form attached to our brand. One in three people on facebook trust the links that come out of that page. One in three people on facebook are at risk.
Its the shear numbers, and the speed at which something could go down that im worried about. I know the traffic the page can drive to a website, Its how i make my living.
They can infect thousands of people in a matter of minutes, using the trust our brand has spent 5 years building.
